Yoga, for many of us, can be a slow progress. We might at first greet the mat with lots of pain, fatigue, and doubt, but why should we throw ourselves into a full yoga sequence, and expect ourselves to perform it perfectly? Especially with EDS or Fibromyalgia. When I began my daily (at home) practice: I would only do the warm up and the cool downs. I skipped over theentire meat of the practice until I worked up enough strength. I constantly skipped Downward-facing Dog and I took Child’s Pose until I learned how to disperse my weight properly. Whenever I did a slow practice, I cried! Had lots oflayers to pull back, but I’m now free from all that pain and welcome stillness as my guide. Here’s an excerpt from the late, great, Yoga Therapist Mukunda Stiles. Breathing takes you out of the stress response, and into “the power of a woman with fibro fibromyalgia awareness“. Conscious Awareness takes you out of worry (which causes most of the pain) and into your Truth, the Ultimate state of Being.

After weeks of scooping water I eventually had to surrender to my physical reality. Fibromyalgia wrist and back pain eventually got the better of me. Laying awake at night in pain I realised that as much as I would want to save water. I felt incredibly defeated and I also became more mindful of the thousands of women. Children in this country who do not scoop and carry extra water but water sorely needed for survival everyday. Painful joints and fever must give way for survival. At day break on one particular rainy morning I eventually dropped my jugs and cried out for help to the blessed mother. I was told later by a Muslim woman about “the power of a woman with fibro fibromyalgia awareness“. My prayer for a rain tank was immediately answered. A very small job opportunity came my way. With it was a very clear instruction that I was not to use that money for any other purpose as much. I would have been able to justify my other needs. I choose to obey the instruction.
