Having worked in hospitality/service industries I just want to say you did the exact right thing. Professional gate opener shirt. If your nice to these people they will go out of their way to help. Wish I could have seen the look on the other passenger’s faces. I cannot tell you how many times I was able to help someone while working for a hotel but didn’t all because of their attitude. It was worth the look on there faces. All the staff seems to enjoy it. I loved how the other staff got in on it too and kept it going when it was time to board.
What is professional?
Making them move out of the way a second time when they didn’t need to so we can get off the cart was awesome. One flight I was called up to the departure lounge desk (which is almost never a good thing) and when I got there the first thing I got was an apology and then she explained that a family of three wanted to sit together so would it be okay to jump me to Economy Plus (comped meal, nobody in the middle) and again we’re very sorry. Obviously, I’m fine with it since I’m traveling alone and who doesn’t like elbow room? When I asked her if a lot of people usually freak out about changes like that even if they get something better she just got a distant look in her eyes and told me I’d be surprised. Swear to god traveling makes some people into the worst versions of themselves.

in an office environment, I’ve always told folks: always take care of the secretary, the office manager, and the IT person …. they are the most critical parts of any operation and know just about everything and can get just about anything done, or be the complete ruin of you. Very true. I love how people treat IT like subservient conveniences only to find out that they are the most important ally when critical failures occur. Who’s important now, eh? Submit a ticket and we’ll see if we can fit you in next Thursday… I once got a meal completely comped because I didn’t kick up a fuss that it wasn’t what I’d ordered. I’d ordered chicken fried steak and got chicken fried chicken. I said to my now-ex “This doesn’t look like steak” and when I cut into it I said “Heh, nope it’s chicken. Oh well”. Apparently, the waiter had been unsure and had been watching from a distance. He immediately approached, asked, apologized and said he’d fix it for me.

Had the same thing happen to me a few times and I’m always polite about it. Professional gate opener shirt. Mistakes happen. Unless its something I absolutely will not eat I won’t send it back either. I loved both sides of this when I worked at a hotel. When someone was kind and friendly, I was happy to return that kindness and do everything possible to help them. It didn’t seem like work.
