Because it’s insulting that Nobody is perfect but if you are born in July you’re a pretty damn close shirt, who supposedly advocates for their welfare, would try to trick them into freedom with a plan that won’t work anyway. It’s like a family at a restaurant that is known for being difficult, demanding that items be removed from the bill, and refusing to tip. After a certain point, servers will refuse to take their table because they’re so ridiculous and aggravating. It’s the same thing here. I think you can attribute that to them being offended by Hermione’s attempt at sneakily freeing them. I can imagine they are offended, even though her intentions come from a good place. Well, Hermione does leave the hats and socks around the tower intending to freeze the house elves.

My understanding is that it is the act of Nobody is perfect but if you are born in July you’re pretty damn close shirt intentionally or not, having a piece of their clothing pass directly from them to the elf. The elf collecting a pile off the floor wouldn’t have any effect. It’s why in the second book Dobby mentions that his masters are careful not to pass him so much as a sock because then he would be free. There is no doubt that Harry is conflict-avoidant when it comes to situations like this. Cho was emotionally needy during OoTP, but comparing this to the moments that Hermione was weepy in the series, it’s quite unfair to say that Hermione was dramatic.
