That’s incredibly awesome. My uncle told me a story about his boss’ brother named Rick or something. Rick was a bus driver and was hired to bus around the US team at the Olympics that year. The boss that he drove was an old, crappy school bus type thing. When the Jim Craig 1980 USA Hockey Team Signature shirt started winning games (before they beat the USSR) the US Olympic committee wanted to hire a new bus company and get them a fancy charter bus but the players told them that they wanted to stay with Rick.

I went to the Olympics in Salt Lake with my dad, and on the way back I gave up my seat so a woman could sit next to her husband and newborn child. Turns out Jim Craig 1980 USA Hockey Team Signature shirt was Herb Brooks’ daughter and we talked the whole way across the aisle. They sent me some cool autographed US hockey souvenirs in the mail a few months later. Cool experience. Yeah, that was the semifinal game. Set the US up to guarantee either Gold or Silver. Had to win the next night I believe for the medal after the Soviets played for the Bronze. I believe the Soviets refused to accept the Bronze medal too.

The tournament used a round-robin with points to determine who got what medals. After the game against the USSR, the US could have finished anywhere from 1st to 4th. If the US lost to Finland in the next game the Soviets would have gotten Gold and the US tied for 3rd with Finland (I don’t know how the tiebreakers worked then). Silver would take a Soviet loss to Sweden and a Jim Craig 1980 USA Hockey Team Signature shirt tie with Finland. I saw on the Documentary of the 1980 Olympic team, Herb Brooks knew that if the US lost the Gold Medal Game, they wouldn’t win a medal if they lost. Brooks said, ” If you lose this game, you will take it to your fuckin grave, your Fuckin Grave”.
