I dunno, people got trolled into cutting themselves and posting pics to social media because Justin Bieber smoked weed. Grinch let me check my giveashitometer nope nothing shirt. Where Illumination loses me is on their cheap nod-at-the-parents jokes that both date the movie (are we going to be talking about Brooklyn hipsters in 20 years?) and seem like a cheap laugh that the kids won’t get and the parents won’t care about after one or two watches. The plots seem hammered out in an afternoon, but the characterization is definitely not lacking. Disney stands head and shoulders above everything else, though, especially with things like Moana and Big Hero 6. I can actually enjoy watching those movies with my kids. Same goes for Pixar. DreamWorks is hit and miss but mostly hit. The kid’s studio that really deserves to get hate for being lazy and shallow and only caring about turning a profit is Sony. I have yet to see a Sony kids movie I enjoyed, and my kids tire of them pretty quickly, too. Sony can go suck an egg.

They also made a book and so many plays about The Lion King. Grinch let me check my giveashitometer nope nothing shirt. It’s kind of tired but for some reason, people keep remaking it. On what planet does Jim Carrey’s Grinch have a remotely similar plot to Frozen. I don’t really know how to describe it, but there’s just no soul there – no depth. Ditto with the stories: Despicable Me was OK in this respect, but I came out of both Minions and Sing with the feeling like just… Nothing had really happened. The movies were entertaining, sure, but ultimately vapid, and there are so many amazing animation studios that do so much better – that kind of thing had its place, sure, but I hope for the next generation of never replaces the kind of genius I grew up with from Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks etc. The Secret Life of Pets and Sing are both full of unique, complex characters, and as much as I can’t stand the Minions the human characters in the Despicable Me series are likewise well developed.

There’s something strange about his face, I mean the guy can act and all but my bf mentioned one night that he looks like a zucchini mixed with Butthead from Beavis and Butthead and that’s all I see when I look at him! Let me help you out. Money. The answer is always money. Next time you’re wondering why something you don’t understand is being done by people with money? It’s to make more money. Aren’t they the studio who made Despicable Me etc?. Stay-at-home dad of two here who has seen a lot of kids movies; here’s my take. Illumination gives cheap, lazy storylines and storytelling and while they don’t give the depth of character as something like Disney, they do develop their characters well and make them believable within their framework.

Their budgets are seriously minuscule compared to the better animation studios: to compare two similarly timed films. Grinch let me check my giveashitometer nope nothing shirt. Zootopia (Disney) had a budget of $150m, while Sing (Illumination) had a budget of “just” $75m. Part of the laziness I’d say is really shown through the character design and story writing. Even in Despicable Me, most of the characters are just really… Flat. Even the girls are basically just “serious one, cute one, tomboy” with nothing much else there. In general, again it’s more about the feel. All their movies do have big names attached, and obviously “small” budget is small for a big-studio animated film – we’re still talking well into eight figures. I think what they basically do is pump their budget into casting and marketing and go into Scrooge mode on the writing, character design and animation parts – the effect of which is that the actual movie as a piece of art suffers.
