I have absolutely explained that more than once. Don’t ask me for advice I still think punching stupid people shirt. It drives me bonkers. I do really appreciate the perspective. I hadn’t considered that emotional support is the nail on the head what I’m looking for when I vent even if what I’m venting about is somewhat trivial. All that said he’s an awesome dude, and these petty little fights don’t deter me from being 100% in this relationship. I’m thinking worst case I just murder him and get my own Lifetime original movie.
What is the punch in meaning?
Maybe you can try and frame it differently for him. Maybe you have already but that’s what immediately comes to mind as solutions. Best of luck though. We all need people we can just vent to. (Feel free to PM me if you want to vent to me!). As a guy, I do the same crap as he does sometimes. I try to be better about it. At the same time these vent sessions are incredibly boring to listen to when they happen all the time, and when there’s nothing you can do to contribute to them other than saying “yeah” “uh huh” “ok” “right” it gets pretty frustrating to have conversations domineered by someone who doesn’t want to talk things out. I totally agree this isn’t something that happens all the time. If I was bitching constantly I would get that he’s sick of it. It’s more like maybe once every couple of months?

I don’t know, it just seems like he’s allowed to vent about coworkers, etc but I’m not allowed to vent about a friend because that’s different and I should doing what he tells me to. I find it super frustrating. Is it when he gives any advice or is it the way he gives advice? Do you think there’s a way he can give the advice without being condescending? I know that it’s unwelcome, to begin with, but I’m wondering if it’s something about the way he does it that can make rephrase the advice and you can let him know you’re just venting without feeling like you’re being talked down to. Oh, it’s definitely the way mixed with I wasn’t asking in the first place. He has good intentions, but it comes across so poorly. We’ve talked about it enough times that I don’t think he’s ever going to understand my perspective on it. You are spot on. Like the girl has been my best friend for over a decade, I definitely do not need you to tell me how to talk to her.

I don’t tell you how to talk to people you know because that’s not my place. Don’t ask me for advice I still think punching stupid people shirt. It almost feels like his “help” comes across as you’re so dumb this will fix everything! Right? The way he’s trying to help isn’t helpful. Just let me vent, halfway pretend to listen and then talk about dinner plans. It takes a close to a non-issue that doesn’t even involve him and turns it into a medium issue between us. Thank you, you’re giving me a point I hadn’t considered.
