We read about that right before our trip, it happened Another Day Another Bucket shirt when we were planning some hikes out. Very terrible but it is pretty rare that they target tourists. In the future when we go back we will be hiring guides to make sure we don’t stumble somewhere we shouldn’t be. Saying that everywhere you go in the canyon there are locals living their day to day in the canyons. We made sure to talk to everyone we came across and they pointed out the areas that shouldn’t be messed with.

I’m pretty strongly convinced that maintaining Another Day Another Bucket shirt with locals and asking about the activity can allow this area to be visited with limited concern. I’m hispanic, been to Mexico plenty of times. I also enjoy hiking and backpacking and do both of them quite frequently as an American. My brown ass rather relives nearly falling a backbone 9.8K feet up than risk going over there. Kudos to whoever goes I suppose That is actually a pretty dangerous area. I wouldn’t recommend going hiking that deep in the Sierra unless you’re doing it with a guide. But it’s a massive area. I live down in Oaxaca and drove through the middle of the country on the way down. Probably why OP brings it up here

Safe is relative. It’s one of the more violent countries you can Another Day Another Bucket shirt. But you’re still probably more likely to be killed in a car accident on a trip to a safe country than you are to be murdered on a trip even to the worst parts of Mexico. People are just a lot more afraid of being murdered. Although my wife was chatting with an Uber driver who said that if the shit hits the fan, don’t expect any help from the police. They’re just there to help you figure out the transit system. We were deffinitly concerned about safety in this area. We didn’t use guides but asked around as much as we could and we assured that there wasn’t any narco activity along our route. A teacher/tourist was killed nearby a few weeks before our trip so we were definitly worried.
